Aiken Weight No More Health Wellness and Weight Loss Centers provides weight loss programs and maintenance solutions determined by each patient’s unique medical needs, weight loss goals, and other individual requirements. Our program includes one-on-one weight loss and wellness evaluation to determine the best plan based on each patient’s weight loss goals and individual health needs.  Our clinic provides a variety of treatment approaches that can be combined in unique ways to address specific weight management needs and challenges of each individual patient.

Our new patient consultation is with Dr. Toomer or one of our highly trained professionals, to determine a safe and effective weight loss program.  We perform a comprehensive medical, social, and well-being assessment, then partner with you to create a plan that fits your life and lifestyle to determine where easy and small changes will have the largest impact. To do this, you will be asked to fill out paperwork at the beginning of your first appointment to help determine the best plan to meet your weight loss goals.  If necessary, we will consult with your primary care physician to obtain important medical records and/or lab results

Other than blah blah blah <generic description here>, what does this mean?  It means we are a “but” center (no, not THAT kind)….. When you say: I know what I’m supposed to do, but I’m too tired to do it;  I want to lose weight, but nothing works or I lost weight, but gained it all back;  I know I shouldn’t be eating this, but I can’t stop myself; My doctor says I have <insert diagnosis here>, but I don’t know if that means I can still lose weight… Our job is to find reasons for the “but” and help you eliminate them.

My Get Well and Weight Loss Journey (can be yours too)

I was a typical active child and never paid much attention to what I ate.  This carried over into adulthood and before I knew it, I was overweight.  Then came the stress-eating-of-medical-school-and-residency weight gain, I-ate-like-my-husband marriage weight gain, I-show-love-through-food weight gain, I-had-two-children-in-three-years weight gain, and (let’s be honest) the I-really-like-cake weight gain – At 5 feet tall and 190 pounds, diabetic, depressed, and arthritic – I was no longer just overweight, but morbidly obese. Then to add insult to injury, I developed congestive heart failure – I was 36 years-old with a newborn, a toddler, and at a new job that I could no longer keep. I was sick, tired, depressed, feeling isolated, ignored, and lost. I knew if I wanted to live to see my children graduate from pre-school let alone college, if I ever wanted to practice Medicine again, I had to do something and I had to do it quickly.

But how does someone who loves food, uses food as her love language, and is medically prohibited from exercise, lose weight? By finding where small changes in my life and lifestyle (for some this includes medication), would have the greatest impact. 60+ pounds down, no insulin, no joint pain, able to move, breath, and 19-and-counting years later (through menopause, work and family stress, even the covid-19 pandemic), I have decided to share what I’ve done for myself and 20 years of patients, with you.  Was it easy? Not always.  Was it hard? Not really.  Can I help you? If you’ll let me.

For the record, I never stopped eating cake…

New Year, New You – a few simple guidelines for resolution success

health_education

Your activity should match your level of athleticism otherwise it will derail your weight loss goals (couch to Zumba will make you crave carbs – the trigger for fat production; Couch to 20 minute walk is more appropriate, then work up)

Restricting calories is harmful to your LONGterm weight loss goals.  If what you’re doing to lose weight isn’t something you can medically, physically, socially, or psychologically maintain for the rest of your life, you won’t and changes will be temporary. Our bodies are designed to prevent starvation and it is more efficient in thwarting your drastic efforts than we are at maintaining them.  Slow and steady wins the race and keeps the trophy for life.

Instead of making drastic changes for temporary results, look for small relatively easy changes for permanent success; e.g. drink 2 glasses water before putting anything else in your mouth; Replace sweet drinks (including juices) with flavored water; Don’t snack after dinner, etc.

Master one change at a time and let your life and body adjust without rebellion.  When changes are tied together and if for any reason you can’t maintain one, you’ll more likely stop them all.
